Brita Ostrom
2011 Massage Therapy Hall of Fame Member

Brita Ostrom began her massage practice at Esalen® Institute, 1969. Together with the Esalen® Massage Crew, she helped refine and continually update Esalen® Massage, an individualized, wholistic bodywork approach. Her studies with Trager, zero-balancing, Patrick Douce and Feldenkrais and countless movement, meditation and awareness practice, and psychological disciplines continue to grow and inspire her work. She is also a licensed psychotherapist and is convinced the body and mind are inseparable, always playing together. "We don't have a healing field without connection," she affirms. For her, the healing experience also comes through contact with nature, something bigger than ourselves. She teaches in the US, Canada, and Japan.

Esalen® Massage in Motion

4 CE Hours

Class description:

We live our lives in motion. A muscle may look static on the anatomy chart, and the ribs nicely lined up, but in fact we are reaching, bending, and coordinating dozens of fine motor skills every second. A joyous mood opens the limbs wider, a anxious thought freezes our breath and draws our limbs in close. In this brief course we will learn to use lifting, rhythmic rocking, passive joint movement and more to make our bodywork more effective, fun for the receiver, and easier for the practitioner.

Starting with gentle lifts, we will learn to support our partner and develop a field of trust. We will passively stretch to access the romboids and shoulders; we will roll to access the low back; we will rock the leg and articulate the femur; we will loosen the cervicals and neck with gentle movement. The diaphragm, keystone of a relaxed state, can let go and breathe freely as other muscles relax. This workshop offers the practitioner a 3-dimensional approach into the body-mind.

Supplies needed for classes: Massage Table, sheets, lotion

PLEASE DO NOT WEAR PERFUME, COLOGNE OR ESSENTIAL OILS TO CLASS.

Advanced Esalen®: Hips & Wings
4 CE Hours

Class description:

This Advanced Esalen Massage will address those chronic hot spots that so often feel stiff and sore: the shoulder junction and the hip/gluteus/leg junction. We will review the relationship between the shoulders and the hips and learn how posture and attitude creates discomfort and ultimate breakdown of these always-in-motion segments.

We will review the deep muscles of the hips and learn body mechanics and leverage, hand positions and skeletal movements to achieve deep contact with our client. Demonstrations will include the benefits of massage for those who have undergone joint replacement. Similarly, we will review the muscles of the shoulder and learn how to use the bones to do some of our release work for us. We will work in the prone and supine position, using stretches to integrate and add playfulness.

Although this course will not focus on the long strokes elemental to EsalenĀ® Massage, it will bring home the important adage: we are all connected up: body-mind-spirit-community. Discomfort in one area breeds discomfort in another. By become more attuned to our client, the practitioner can become innovative and gain effectiveness in evoking a sense of comfort and ease.

This workshop is suitable for the professional practitioner who have had some training in holistic massage and want to learn more.

Supplies needed for classes: Massage Table, sheets, lotion
